1958 brake upgrade

Good Day All,
I have recently bought a '58 F100 and, as you can guess, I have many questions. Here's today's question.

I am looking through the 3rd Ed. National Parts Depot Ford Catalog. Page 48 shows an SSBC Front Disc Brake Conversion Kit that is supposed to be a bolt-in replacement for "48-56 Ford bolt pattern" Will this conversion "bolt-in" to the stock '58 spindle?

Once I have the stock 11" x 2" front drums off can I bolt them on the rear to replace the 11" x 1 3/4" stock rear drum?

The disk brake kits bolt on to your front spindles. I am not sure about the master cylinder on those trucks but you will also most likely need a dual resevoir master cylinder. Others who have done this to a newer truck will be along.

Dave58,

If you are looking for a power disc conversion, I just purchased one from CPP, complete kit including booster, MC, all bolts and washers, proportioning valve, and even the residual ck valve--everything for @ 900. I would also recommend checking MP Brakes to see their prices. This is a direct bolt-on kit, with very little, if any at all, modifications.

I think your complete brake assy from the front would fit on the rear, but I am not sure that you would actually gain that much from doing so.

Good luck,
Vernon

I would go with Master Power Brake, I have used them and the kit was good and everythig fit great. I have heard horror stories from more than one person about the CPP kits.

Thanks Guys,

So, the spindle on the '58 is the same as the '53-56?

I anticipated needing a master cylinder upgrade.

Good Afternoon All,

I went to the Master Power webpage. They say '56 and older have 4 1/2" bolts and '57 and newer have 5 1/2 bolts. Is that true?

Well. I can say that the 57-58-59-60 all have the 5 1/2 bolts

Also check with ECI for a front disk kit. They will sell you an entire kit or just the basic kit for about $100, which includes the brackets and needed spacers. You would then have to purchase the calipers, rotors, and pads from your favorite parts store. It might be a way to save on shipping those heavy parts across country. Just an option for you.
You will definitely need a dual master cylinder for the disk brakes. Check to see if late 60's Mustang (with disks) will bolt to the firewall where your stock master cylinder resides now. Of course you will have to replumb the brake lines to accomodate having separate systems front to back.

For the rear brakes I would look at a set of 11 x 2.25 off of a early Bronco with the small bearing 9'' Ford rear end. These are self adjusting and should bolt on your 9" without modification. As for the front I'm as new to these trucks as you are.
