1st Rebuild-- Piston ring offset

I've got my bottom end together but am concerned after relooking at the piston ring offsets shown on the shop manual.

The diagram lists positions for A, B, and C. A is the Oil Ring Spacer. This I presume to be the serpentine-like thick spring. Does it matter if the ends are up or down? My help states they must be up but he's an admitted Chevy guy.

Diagram shows Oil rings B are offset 1 inch either side of wrist pin centerline facing back . I think mine are rotated opposite one another by 180 degrees.

Diagram shows compression rings C are offset 1 inch from centerline of wrist pin facing front.

My question is how critical is the degree / amount of offset. Is it okay as long as they are installed with gaps opposite to one another?

I know it's alot of questions but I still have an opportunity to change it now if experts recommend it.

based on your other posts here, you have some other isssues that are going to need to be corrected anyway so go ahead, and pull them out, and put them where they are supposed to be.
But for future it is better to put them like the book says but as long as the gaps aren't lined up it will be ok anyway. The rings will move around some when the engine is running anyway. But like I said in your case I would go ahead and fix this while your working on other stuff that needs fixed.

Ring Offsets

Thanks Monster.

I'll go ahead and realign. I got the compression right but the oil rings arent' set like the book though they are opposite one another.

I figured things would move around some over time and even during install. With these factors at play I couldn't see it being as critical as is shown in the manual diagram though i understood need to offset them.
