I'm going to install a factory cargo light on the Pumpkin and have been trying to find a good diagram of the factory opening.
Grinnergetter and RunninD tried to help (thanks, guys).
What I ended up doing was using the gasket to make a template.
I figured I'd post it here so anyone that might be thinking about puting a cargo light on their "baby" will have it.
One thing thats real important. The hole IS NOT centered on the cab! The hole is slightly offset to the passenger side. When laying out the dimensions, use the vertical centerline between the two mounting screws as the overall vertical centerline.
Nice idea, might have to consider doing that to the '79!
If you use the correct one for a '79 the drawing won't work. In mid-77 the design of the cargo lamp was changed.
However there's no reason why you can't use a pre mid-77 light. The roof is the same, just the light changed.
Is there a reason the light isn't centered? Or is it the light itself? John
The light itself IS centered. It's the opening that's cut into the roof that isn't centered.
On the back side of the light the wiring and the bump out on the casting is off center. This is something that's not visible from the front but it means the opening has to be off center. If you cut the hole centered in the middle of the roof, when you mount the light it will be off center to the drivers side by about 1/2".
Template copied and filed away for future use; thank you. Question: how high above the rear window weatherstripping is the bottom of the hole? My F350 is a Lariat that is loaded with most options, but this one is missing. I would have thought the cargo light would be part of the Lariat package. My previous truck was a Custom, and it had one. Actually, I used to think the cargo light was a standard feature on all trucks.
Even though my truck is "on the back burner" nowadays and I only drive it once a month to exercise it, I check this website everyday for tips and info. I'm mulling around a Cummins swap. I have a '97 Dodge/Cummins, so I'm familiar with them. But that project will have to wait. The first priority is to build a new house!
Anyway, thanks MikeoOoOo and Number Dummy and all of you for all the great info.
Andy
Thanks NorthwestX360, I'm not sure of the vertical location of the light. I'm going to research it some but if I can't come up with anything I'm just going to position it so it "looks right" to me.
Mike,
My local JY just got in a 2wd with a light, so I'll get you the vertical measurement on Monday.
Also if anyone is interested there's a pretty nice 2wd F100 in Wyoming and knowing the yard owner he's got the title due to where its sitting! I'll pass on more after I fondle her on monday!
Just took a quick measurement on dad's truck. Between the light housing and weatherstrip was a 3/8" gap. 74 XLT with factory cargo light.
Thanks Rouge-Wulff. From the pics I've been able to find it did look pretty narrow, your measurements confirms it.
Tried to rep you but it said I had to spread it around first.
Thanks again.
