Thanks so much for all the info. Found the tag in the glove box. 14,000 pounds - definately an F5- right?

Big Truck

I just got a 1959 F-600 here in Tucson AZ. Used to be a city truck, has the 292, 2speed rear, dump bed, half the glass it needs, plenty of rust, flaking white paint someone sprayed over everything, the widow maker wheels, all is perfect by me-lots of work to do...

That's a very cool truck..... you should get it back!

There's nothing like a BIG Ford...I love to drive up next to a newer lifted F350 dually and be at the same eye level as them!!

Regards,

Rick

The guy who has it needs to sell it, if anyone's interested.

I'd love to get it back, but my wife absolutely hates it. She's pretty much let's me do what I want, so to keep it that way I got rid of it.

It sure turned lot's of heads.

Yeah....I know what you mean....I get a LOT of second looks at mine!! (in the gallery)

I even got my wife to go for a ride in it (ONCE!!) It's not restored yet and her problem is that it doesn't have seatbelts...I reach for the shoulder harness everytime I get in it! I'll probably put a split bench in it that has shoulder harnesses built right in.

(btw....have you tried FEDORA CORE 4 yet? RH7.x, 8.x, 9... is so seriously outdated!! I've been using SUSE Linux pro for several years as you can see by my Avatar.....I don't want to hijack this thread so just respond via the personal message if you like!)

Cheers,

Rick

1949 F-6

All original, V8, minor rust and only 12000 miles. It's an old firetruck.

Hi Rick,
Regarding your questions about my 1959 F-600: it has a 292 V-8, a Clark 250V five speed transmission (very deep 7.08:1 first gear) and an Eaton 13602 rear axle. The transmission is a little odd in that it is built with synchro's only on forth and fifth gear, the others require double clutching. The axle is an electrically shifted two speed with ratios of 6.33/8.81:1 (pretty low gearing - tops out at about 60 mph).
I've done 4x4 conversions on light trucks before, but to convert this truck to four wheel drive would require a custom built (re: expensive) front driving axle in order to get the proper tread width, weight and torque capacity, brake drum size, wheel hub bolt pattern, etc. It would seem to be much simpler and cheaper for you to buy a similar year Marmon-Herrington/ or Napco/ Ford conversion, and transfer the driveline parts.

Dad has a 56 T700. The truck is restored pretty much stock with a home made tilt bed for hauling his 28 Fordson in parades. Photos are in gallery.

Another 2wd axle option that looks really nice is GMC school bus axles. My 64 F500 had axles from a 60's GMC school bus. A tad wider, so the stance was better looking, and they were for sure rated for more weight. 2 speed rear, just like stock.

For 4wd a 5 ton military axle might fit the bill, and it just might be wide enough. You could buy a pair on ebay for $$$, or if you have the space, buy a surplus 5 ton truck for $800-1200 dollars. A 2.5 ton rockwell might cut it too. I think there's a good chance it's the same bolt pattern.

I do need to find a 2 speed axle for sure. Most of them were 5.83/8.xx:1 My single speed is 6.83:1 (Timken axle) and requires something like 3600rpm for 60mph! It just screams! Sounds like it's coming unglued!

I am currently looking in Western WA for a 2 speed if anyone knows of one around here. I want to be able to use my brake backing plates/brakes etc(everything in there is new).

I'm not all that hot to put 4x4 in it actually....It would be nice but like someone said earlier it would be MUCH easier to find a MH truck all ready to go...

I have thought about military axles...but they might be a little BIG!

1948 F-7

I have a 1948 F-7 stake bed. The bed is not original. It is 16' long made out of cherry. Has the original 337 flathead and 5 speed trans. Restored but the P.O. didn't keep up on the mechanical stuff. I am waiting for spring so I can start working. Temps outside are in the low 20's. It's hard to flush the radiator when the water freezes.

Hey that sounds good. Do you know what the ratios are and where are you?
