First off, thanks to all who responded to previous posts. This site is awesome. As previously stated, I have an 88 Bll with manual trans that was running well, but had the annoying intermittant tapping. Acquired a fresher motor from wrecked 1990 B2 automatic with itention of doing swap. Now that 88 motor is out of vehicle, I am wondering if a good cleaning, new oil pump and heads might solve tapping, or would it be better to swap as planned and deal with potential computer incompatibility problems. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
As i stated eailer i am pretty sure you dont need to mess with the comps as my 88 is running the 90 2.9 with out probs..and i did not put in the 90 comp as my firend from ford said you only need it if your putting the auto in. execpt the fuel pumps dying which is expected from a 17 year old vehicle.
So i am in the process of replaving the high pressure pump now. just had the low presseure (in tank) done about a week ago.
I would go ahead and put the 90 in.
As i siad this is my .02

I would still drop the oil pan and put in a new oil pump, cleane the oil pick up tub and screen.Just some good ins.and beats having to pull the engine back out.JMO
the reason the 90 got put in my 88 is that it had a blown head gasket and eventually cracked the block. ran strong (till it over heated about 6 million times) but i had no probs with the switch. just make sure you have a haynes manual to help you through it.
If you ask ford about it they'll want to look at it and say that the idea of puttin a 90 2.9 in a 88 is out of the question and cant be done.
At least i had some one that worked at a ford dealership to help me through the motor swap.
My car sat in my garage for a bout a month becuase i was taking my time. as it was not my daily driver
Thanks wicky for input. Have engine from 90 b2 ready to go in tomorrow. If I end up rebuilding the 88, the old lifters are definitely history.
Regards, Ferg
