your getting the actual ignition box confused with the coil. the coils last but the 6a boxes tend to not live long. some do though and have ran them for many years.
From many posts in other forums I have heard that most bronco owners have had issues with MSD coils and their life spans. I have been researching which coil to go with and at first MSD was the chit. But now I have heard that Crane coils are higher quality, better life span. Check them out. This is probably what I would go with along with the Ford 9mm wires. MSD really has a nice Cap and Rotor set though (secondary cap holds the plug boots down). Just installed a month ago. I've got pictures if anyone wants to see them (86 ford bronco, efi).
Sorry...link would not take you directly to the coil. Here is the part name and number...enter it at the Summit Racing page.
Kem,
It was the coils I was refering to...but I have also heard the same about the ignition boxes. I have just heard alot of complaints about their coils going bad and I have heard nothing but positive about the Cranes from other Bronco Forums. Like I said MSD was my first choice but then upon hearing complaints I am leaning more toward the Crane. What kind of warranty do you get with the MSD coil?

I dont know about that......I visit quite a few forums and considering how many Bronco drivers use MSD coils, I do not hear of them failing prematurely. Nor have I read anything overly positive about Crane coils.
Can you post a link to the research you did regarding the MSD vs Crane????
Dang...I just ordered the MSD coil, ignition box, and cap and rotor. I sure hope it doesn't go bad on me! I've still got all the original 87 stuff on there so I'm hoping the MSD stuff will last as long!

Street - I will try to do some looking today and link to the posts.
i beleieve 8227 but not sure. thats what fits all the way up to 95.
daddy J, i wouldnt worry about it. i think some of the folks that have this trouble either mount the box in a bad spot or dont take the time wiring them up reall good and neat. if you could mount it to the firewall vs the fender well you would be better off for sure. also if you could cut the wires to proper lengths have good connections and loom everthing you will be fine. maybe even a little heat shield between the box and motor just for a little extra protection.
I'l post some quotes from some of the guys from another site. I would link but this site is picky about linking to a competing site. Some are opinion others in fact have had issues. I really respect Sixlitre's opinion and knowledge. He has really helped me out quite a bit. This is just a smattering of research...is it true research...no. If it was I would buy both and do 36-month comparative study. I have had to take what others have already observed and apply it to my own perspective and decision. Many have had good luck with the MSD others have not. All I am saying is that there are posts on boards out there that are negative towards MSD and have not yet oberved any negative posts regarding the Crane. Their more money? Not sure about that. I think I found the one that fits mine for around $50. A wise man once said you get what you pay for...of course all is fair in a competitive market! So here is some information I hav dug up, there is more out there its just a matter of diggin it upo again. Thanks guys!
Sixlitre -"as I've had to put the stock coil back on from time to time when the MSD burned out on me. That said I've ran stock, several MSDs and an Accel and I have experienced the MSD to be the best one IMO."
Guy94 - "I have tried MSD coils on my mustang. The only thing I noticed was a hum that drove me out of the car!
The factory units are very good! Besides, MSD is not the best choice by far! In the mustang world, many have had problems with them. I would look to Crane. For all the work that I can't do, I go to Travis at Mustang Services. One, because he knows his **** and does quality work! Two, I would never bring my car to Dugan.
He has told me on more than one occassion to stay away from MSD. Besides, like I said in my last reply, the stocker is a great unit.
MSD in the last 5 to 7 years has not put out a quality product. I have had buddies go thu their coils like underwear! Other friends has had their 6 boxes go bad. Others may not have had problems and that's OK. To each his/her own. I will go Crane. Not only because FRPP uses them, but they are simply better than MSD.
I am not bashing anyone who uses MSD, so please don't get me wrong. If you use them and haven't had a problem than that's great."
Sixlitre - "I'd have to admit to you that I went through a series of MSD coils, luckily almost all were replaced at the point of sale and sent back.
I got disenchanted with them and decided to try the grass on the other side of the fence for a while. CTC actually traded in my MSD for an Accel just like it. I didn't like that at all so I went back to the MSD and IMO I noticed a difference. I'd also fess up that my MSD-6 has been back so much for repairs I just don't use it anymore. It did smooth out the rpms everywhere, but no mileage increase that I saw."
Sixlitre - "From what you and others, particularly Fireguy, I intend to use the Crane spark box next time I've got that much scratch to blow. Meantime I have a good working MSD coil and brand new, in the box back up MSD coil."
Yes.....I also respect a few of those guys opinions. I have noticed that some of the guys with the MSD-6 set up were having premature failures, but most of the coils have held up. Sometimes you will get a bad "batch" of them that slipped through quality control checks, and then you may get a few back to back that are crap. I dont run the MSD-6 CDI.....I did replace the stock coil with the MSD Blaster unit though (I have also kept the "known good" stock unit in my on board tool box just in case).
From the small amount of research I have done it seems that there are better choices than the MSD out there for a CDI box. I believe the crane unit is totally waterproof, and completely sealed up from ANYTHING getting in there to damage it.......from what I understand the MSD unit is OK, but just not as beefy as the others....????
