Auto vs. Standard

Hello all! New to the site here, but liking what I see so far. I'm looking to purchase a 94 or newer powerstroke dually, going to be doing a lot of towing, mostly cars (1 at a time) wondering what the longevity of the Automatic transmissions are and if I might be better with a stick. Also I hear that the autos won't hold up to many power modifications. True? I've driven both, I prefer the standard, but I've found a sweet auto that is in pristine shape. Opinions? Thanks!

When properly maintained, the E4OD will provide years & miles of service towing. My first one lasted 207k & it was not properly maintained. As for handling power, it seems to handle the 100hp setting of the tuner just fine.

I agree with bigtow.

I prefer the 6 spd, but it's awfull hard any more to find a used truck that fits your specifications to the very last detail.

My reccomendation would be to find the configuration that suits your needs the most, and not get overly worried about the Auto vs Manual thing.

I have seen a few well maintained Autos go to pieces too. If I had a choice i would get the 6speed,, I didnt have a choice and ended up with an automatic tranny, so far 68,000 miles and no trouble yet.
