I was just asked at our local car club meeting if I was interested in a ford 427 that he called a wide block or tall block motor complete but needs rebuild, for $1000 cnd. What is it in basic terms and what is it worth?
He might have been thinking of wedge instead if wide and tall. But anyway $1000 is a steal for a complete 427. There are two types...the center or topoiler and the sideoiler. Also some marine blocks which some were cast as sideoilers but machined as centeroilers. The 427's have a std bore of 4.23 and a stroke of 3.78. Crossbolted maincaps and enlarged oil passages are std. First came out in 63 1/2 and available over the counter well into the 70's. This is THE FE engine to have. The block alone is worth the $1000. G.
Uh, yeah. If it is indeed an FE motor (look for 5 valve cover bolts, and check the FAQ for other ID stuff), then confirm that it is a 427 bore of 4.23". I all that checks out, get some casting numbers and post them here so these guys can make sure it's not an over-bored 360/390/428 block.
If that all checks out, and there's not a rod sticking out the side of the block, beg borrow or steal and get it!
You know gtex is right. It could be a 429 or something possibly. The crossbolt mains will be one of the clues to a 427. Three bolts on each side of the block above the pan rail or skirt. G.
I suspect that he wall talking about a Chevy. The have standard and "Tall Deck" blocks. Ford has no such thing. Go look at it. I'll bet the distributor is in the back.
If it turns out to be a Ford, I wouldn't buy it until I had the bores measured to make sure it isn't already used up. Typically a .030 on a 427 is all you get. If the bores are still within reason, then it is a steal at $1000.
Uggg, that would be a bummer if it was a chevy 427. Hey you never know....like the lucky guy on the 385 forum that found a BOSS 429 for $200!!!!! I need some luck like that. Let us know what you find. G.
