Is anyone experiencing this problem -- when the temp drops to -25 to -40 below zero, my "Check Engine" light flashes when I accelerate moderately. My anti-freeze is good to -65, oil pressure is good, temp gauge within normal. Any ideas ??
Time to turn on the electric blanket, throw another log on the fire and stay home!!
The only thing I can think of is if your oil is too thick and it takes a while before it will thin out good enough to really flow. You also could possibly be running too rich with the cold air, cooler operating temp, and gas is also a little more explosive when cold (more power). But I'm just throwing out ideas....
Tamarack,
Geez ...-25 and it is 60 here in Tn today .What engine and model truck ? Some sensors like the Air Temp Sensor dont function so well when its that cold until the engine heat gets going .

Yeah, I'd say 5W30 is definitely the way to go. We used to run straight 10W when it was this cold on the farm. The thicker oil will give you great oil pressure, but not a lot of viscosity, so it's probably not flowing through the engine too good. Do you run a tank or oil heater. We ran them to keep the engine warm enough to thin out the oil on startup. I haven't had to worry about that for the last 20 years though, in sunny southern California and now in North Carolina.
Are you getting a code 113?
I am also getting this. It is the Air Charge Temp Sensor. It gives this reading when the circuit is open, or when it reads -40 for the air temp. I was going to change the sensor, but I think it is just doing its job. I also checked everything like you said, coolant and oil. I think it just makes a real rich mixture. I have been just ignoring it because I don't know what else to do, if there is anything. I pulled the plugs, and they looked fine, so I think it is nothing to worry about.

Tamarack,
Are you referring to the Check Engine Light as in the light warning of a possible Ecu / sensor problem or the Engine / Oil Light indictaing some problem with the lubrication ? I guess since you mentioned the cold where you live maybe you meant the Engine / Oil light . My brain went the other direction thinking that when you said Check Engine Light that maybe the cold was affecting a sensor .
