engine light blinking and misfires
I have a 2001 ford escape. Today it starts to miss and the engine lights starts flashing. It is never the same amount of flashes. Sometimes its 8 or 10 flashes. I counted up to 25 flashes one or twice It just shakes bad and that's when the flashing starts. When it starts to miss and vibrate, I can accelerate in passing gear and it smoothens out. When you hold it at a constant speed it starts missing again. Cannot get a code with my reader. Someone told me a flashing light indicates a misfire. Does anyone what what may be causing this problem?

You probably ought to take it to a mechanic. Without any codes, you'd be guessing as to what to repair.
Some possibilities: COPs, COP boots & wires, chaffing wires at PCM, battery & grounds, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump or injectors.
From searching the internet for "what causes a flashing check engine light" (flashing MIL):
It means that there is a severe misfire & it is warning you that catalytic converter damage is imminent if you continue driving the car.

It's a severe misfire, one capable of causing rapid catalytic converter damage. The number of flashes is irrelevant, the MIL will continue to flash as long as the rate of misfires exceeds the pre-programmed threshold.
If you can't read the stored fault code, you may need a new or different scan tool. If you're not in California or Canada, many auto parts stores will check it for free. Make certain your cigar lighter has power since the same fuse supplies the OBDII port power for many scanners.
Most likely, you will need a new spark plug and COP for the bad cylinder, at a minimum.
