I have a 91 f150 with tilt wheel. The ignition switch actuator does not move back with the tumbler. The actuator is good at the switch but at the tumbler there must be a disconnect. I do not know how to get enough of the shrouds off to see the actuator at the tumbler area. They seem to be solid and I do not want to get to far ahead of myself by just removing bolts. Anyone got any ideas?
Apachepilot ,
Im assuming the Actuator rod is broken ? To remove the tumbler , turn the key to the on position , on the steering column you will see a small V shaped indentation , take a pick or some pointed object and push in on the pin located there , it may push hard . Once you feel the pin move in , the tumbler will pull out of the steering column . Hope this helps ...not quite sure what you are trying to fix ?

Yea Baby! You're going to have some fun! Just got to dig in there, you will find the broken part soon enough. It's a little $10 part from Ford that breaks on all of these trucks around 120,000 miles. Good Luck!
You better believe it. Digging is a good word for it. I'll describe it as good as I can remember. Go ahead & pull out your tumbler like he said. Then pull your steering wheel. Take off your turn signal switch. Then you should be able to see your broken linkage. Your linkage is connected to another short rod which locks your steering wheel when your tumbler is in the off position. That's where my brake was. Oh, and you'll probably need to drop your whole steering column down on the seat to get to your ignition switch and linkage before you start. That should get you where you need to be. Good luck.
And by the way, don't try to fix it. It's only a $10 part and it's too big a pain to do it twice. Trust me.

I had the same problem on my 89 F-150 and here is what I did. First, on mine with the steering wheel removed, there are three shroud pieces left on the column. The one closest to the dash is removed by taking the screw out from the very bottom of the column. Next, on the second piece, if you stick your head down towards the bottom of the column and look towards where the steering wheel should be, you'll notice that the second shroud is held in place with 4 screws on the inside. Remove them and slide the shroud down the column. Remove the turn signal switch. Next, there are two THREADED pins on either side that hold the tilt mechanism together. You can get the special tool to remove them, or I just used the right threaded screws and screwed them into the pins and pulled on them with vice grips. Much cheaper than the special tool. At that point you can slide the tilt mechanism forward enough to gain access to the piece that is broke that connects the ignition tumbler to the accuator rod. Assuming that is what is wrong in the first place. I've been told that it is very common for this piece of cast metal to break from the dealership.
