I was going to get a BTM, but knew I was going to end up with a whole exhaust, so I didn't want to spend $50, then throw it away.
Still, the BTM is a great deal. I have read that you get about 85% of the benefit of a $500, 4" exhaust system with just a $50 muffler. Add that to a 10k mod and the high performance value can't be beat!!
What is that, about a 25% (or better) power boost for under $100?
I guess I have been mixing up some of the terms here. I thought the 'Flutter' that the first gen powerstrokes are so prone to, was that sort of bogged down sound(It almost sounds as if it will stall) you can get at low RPM. I know what diesel turbo flutter sounds like, but I mixed up some terms somewhere along the line. Can anyone straighten me out here?
Is the consensus that no low end torque is lost with straight piping?
Well,
I went with the BTM from Walker. It has a little deeper growl to it than the stock muffler had. The installer asked me if I even thought it was any louder!!
When I left the lot, I could hear the turbo spool up leaving from the stop. Going down the road it is just a hair bit louder than stock. Now I just need to have the wife drive it and stand in the street and see if a bystander hears more flutter.

Funny, that's what I did. Had the wife stand on it, and I was really pleased with the sound, but then she kept on going, didn't see her or my sister for about as long as it takes two women to go mall!

Well Ranger,
I went ahead and did just that. I let my wife drive it down the street so I could listen to the exhaust. I also got out the dog's shock collar and rigged up the seat so when she wouldn't come back I could zap her in the rear!!
Just kidding on that part, but now I wish I would have added the BTM to the poll when I first started this. I have seen several posts on other sites saying the PSD sounds like a sick dog with a straight pipe on it. What do these people refer too? The BTM sounds almost like the straight pipe, just toned down.
The stock muffler on an OBS truck is a 3.5" straight through design, and isn't restrictive. That's what I have on my truck. Immediately after the muffler, the system expands to 5" and exits in the stock location. I've got the best of both worlds: when I'm leaving for work at 4am, I don't wake up the entire cul-de-sac. Once I put the hammer down, the sound is deep and throaty, after coming out of the 5" tailpipe.
all my trucks are strait piped. had to do it to my wifes after i did it to the 97, ive got the 5" infront of the rear tire in my 97 and its a little loud but its going back to the back corner soon once the 94.5 is back togethor gonna air ride the back of the 97 and gonna do it then. but have been driving it like that for 3 years so i guess it isnt that bad since i havent done anything about it.
