1994 Ford Taurus overheating problems

Hi this is my first post to the forum and unfortunately I'm in the midst of a problem with a 1994 Taurus. The car has a 3.8 litre engine with 85k. It has been through a recall for headgasket replacement and about two years ago I had to replace a cracked head. The car has sat for the last 6 months and I took it to work yesterday. It started overheating on me. I replaced the thermostat and the problem still existed as I thought it might. I noticed that the fan was not running at times. I do know that turning on the AC forces the fan on. I ended this session at 0200 this morning and so I haven't checked it out fully yet to know if this is truly the problem. Can someone tell me where the fan temperature switch is located? I'd like to meter it. Also the coolant appears quite clean but could I be dealing with a clogged radiator? Any and all advice is welcome!
Thanks
Wayne

I think a common problem with Taurus/sable was inadequate cooling, and frequent radiator flushes are considered necessary, especially for the transmission health.

You'll absolutely want to add a tranny cooler, and I recall a Taurus website which recommended bypassing the trans cooler on the radiator for the overheating reasons above.

Welcome to FTE!

On your '94 Taurus, the primary input to the computer (PCM) that determines cooling fan operation is the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor. When the PCM gets a signal from the ECT that a certain engine temperature has been reached, the PCM then energizes the cooling fan relay which runs the fan. The cooling fan relay is an integral part of the Constant Control Relay Module - the CCRM is located under the radiator's plastic protective shield (the one that has all the stickers on it).

You can check the ECT as follows: http://fordfuelinjection.com/index.php?p=28
