Flywheel thickness

Hi,

The clutch on my 93 Ranger 4X4 w/4.0L engine is starting to slip. Vehicle has 156K miles. Supposedly the clutch was replaced at 99K miles by a previous owner ... Question is : If the flywheel needs machining what is the nominal thickness for a new flywheel so I put a shim in for proper dimension?

Thanks in advance for your answer..

Where are you going to place this shim?

Your machine shop should know the minimum thickness. If they cannot get it resurfaced and meet that spec, then the flywheel should be replaced. This is like a front rotor, if it is too thin, then replace it.
I've had mine resurfaced several times without problems. (Young sons learning to drive a manual transmission). So if it has only been replaced once, I doubt you'll have any issues with resurfacing again.

The shim would be placed behind the flywheel to make up for what was machined off to keep dimensions correct for the pressure plate.

The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel and won't make any difference how much is shaved off the flywheel.
It it gets too thin it will have a tendency to warp.
We used to shave them paper thin when racing and never worried about shims.
