I was having a problem with my F150's guages not working properly. I worked on the negative cable from the battery and solved that problem. I could give Ford some advise on where to place the cable instead of where they did on a 302 motor.
Now I seem to have another problem. This truck takes forever to warm up. It took 15 minutes to warm to operating temperature, it is currently 86 degrees here. With AC on high and headlamps on. Without those it appears to take longer. This truck didn't have this problem until recently.
I replaced the charge senser and coolant temp sensor a few months ago. People have mentioned that you can check the resistance on them. How do you go about doing that? I've yanked the wire off the charge sensor, and the guage doesn't drop to cool or hot at all, just stays put. Is it possible I have a short in the wiring to that?
I dont' remember this truck taking so long to heat up.
Also, the voltage guage seems to wander a bit, but it has for many years. People have described generation differences, but this truck has the internal fan, so I would assume it's a second generation, it does show a charge on full throttle, but not much at idle.
I recently had a problem with my truck getting warmer than usual and slow warm-up. I checked thermostat and it was held open, like designed when broken. I am not sure if that was the exact porblem because i did several other things myself including having the radiator rodded out, new water pump, new fan clutch, and flushing the system with prestone cleaner. It now get to operating temp better and maintains no problem. I would try T-stat first.
My 95 351 only runs at 155-160 degrees no matter what. Doesn't take very long to warm up in 70 degree weather though. It has a 190 degree thermo in it.... I'm thinkin it might be stuck open. What do you guys think?
If the tstat is open, from what my dad told me the engine can still overheat. The way he put it was, if the tstat is open and water is constantly circulating it doesn't have time to be cooled in the radiator which would cause slight abnormal heating. not nesseccarily extreme but high than usual.
As qman said its only $5 to check and replace.
