Hi guys i just biught a 1994 7.3l idi turbo high milers but it runs great no smoke nothin when i bought it i dorve truck for a week then rigged it up for our camper went camping may long weekend unit ran great pulling 7-10% grades half way there she began to over heat i was not running too hard i puled over let it cool down and checked coolant level etc all ok kept on opur way driving it easy on the flats it had no problems only when climbing a hill i have this problem but when we went to leave the camp sight i started it to warm up she smoked like a pig untill warm came home taking it easy and left it over night re started in am smoked really bad again when cold and gone when hot i just changed all fluids before we went and all filters I am a mechanic but have never worked on an idi engine all diesel experience has been with the 7.3 di and 6.0 di engines any help would be appreciated . I really like the truck it still runs great and is in good shape i am willing to learn all i can but at the ford dealership i work at there is no shop manuals for these and no one knows anything about them either but i would like to be able to fix my own truck
P.S. it does run rough when started for about 5 min then smooths out i am thinking injector sticking when unit got hot on me we do still have the bench tester but i would just like some guidance before removing injectors to test them thanks again guys
If it's missing, figure out which ones by cracking the lines loose or feeling the exh manifolds for cold cylinders. If you can narrow it down to 1 cylinder, it must be the injector (or something else in that cylinder... but we don't want to go there).
well now i wonder if i just got bad fuel i filled rear tank befor i left that day and that is when it all started last night switched to front tank wich is fuel from different source and unit started and ran fine this am no smoke and idles smooth when i topped up rear the fuel was not from a reputable sorce in our area but i was there and nothing else unless i back tracked for fuel i am goin to change fuel filter and fill rear tank with known good source this time i hope that is all it is
try putting a heavy dose of power service to the rear tank to use the fuel in there. Or syphon out what ya can and double dose it anyway. Just a thought since you say the front tank works well, but I would tend to believe the crap from the rear tank is still in the filter and affecting operation of either tank. However, stranger things have happened. Good luck and keep us posted.
