93 IDI Problems Please Help

Truck Info: 1993 F-250 7.3l IDI N/A Regular Cab, long wheel base
204,000 Miles
Original IP
New Delphi BB Injectors and Return Lines
CDR Never Replaced or Cleaned
4.10 ratio Gears and ZF5 Manual Tranny

Problem:
We bought this truck last year with about 196,000 miles from the original owner. Ever since we bought it it has made a chuffing/popping noise at the tailpipe. It also smokes black some when you really stomp it. It starts easy even on cold mornings and seems to have good power unloaded. Pulling anything over a ton though it is completely different. It smokes black excessively and will pull the load but not very quickly at all. And when it comes to hills you can get it up to 75-80 mph and hit the hill and within 8 seconds be doing 50 in OD. In 4th it will hold its speed, and not gain much if any at all uphill. And smokes black like crazy. Idle is slightly shaky at times and others its smooth. Sometimes I feel like I can hear a hissing sound under the truck like and exhaust leak but im not sure. It chuffs all the time but I can't notice any ticking or knocking from the engine. I've heard that the chuffing could be due to a lifter or valve but I dont know how to tell. In the service manual I think it said irregular exhaust pulses could be due to a failing IP? Also, If I loosen the third Injector back on the left bank (cant remember the cyl #) It makes the chuffing quieter and its the only one that effects the noise. I switched Injectors around but the problem still persists in the same cylinder. What Could be my problem? Where should I start? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

welcome to FTE.
first off, it is indeed the original injector pump, it is at least 50,000 miles past it's life expectancy.

the best i ever got out of an injector pump is 175,000 miles.
they usually need replacing between 100 and 150 thousand miles.

i always use a local rebuilder to do my pumps. but they sold out to fleetsource a few years ago and the quality of their work has gone severely down hill because they ship the pumps out now. so i have been running an old pump on its last legs waiting for it to die.

They both have their strong points. In the end, it will be up to you to decide, but you have two of the best choices you can get. Myself, I would go with the R+D one.
