I think some of the 60-70s cars actually used a flexible steering shaft (for some reason Mustangs comes to mind?) that might be adapted to eliminate all the U joints?

I think Ford tried that on the pinto. I read an article on it not too long ago (might have been in Rod & Custom). From what I read it was not the best system in the world. Must not be a viable solution or we'd see it more I think, too bad, it would sure make some things easier
