Just got an email from Mcafee that my 1 yr free firewall trial will end after today. I know I need to go ahead and get a hardware firewall, but until then what freeware firewalls are good?
www.zonealarm.com One of the best firewalls. The free version does a excellent job of keeping out the hackers and will stop any programs already on your computer you don't want to access the internet from connecting to it, such as malware. If you have any other firewall installed, uninstall it first. After you install it, go into the program and tell it to log alerts, not to show them, or a alert baloon will pop up every five minutes when something is trying to access your ports. Expect that right after you install it, when you execute a program like IE browser or any other program that you use with the internet, it will pop up and ask you if you want that program to access the internet or not. Just click yes, and remember this, so that it doesen't ask you again. After a while it will know all the programs that you use on the net that are safe to allow access to. Then just forget about it unless it alerts you that a update is available to download. The only gripe I have with it is that when a update comes out, you have to download a whole new program instead of just updated files like the antivirus and spyware programs do.
Same here with Spybot. I use Spyware Blaster and Microsoft's anti-spyware beta and Ad-Aware. I use three since each one cleans a few things the others don't.
yep, zone alarm, spybot s&d(it does other stuff), ad aware, spyware blaster, clean cache, bho demon, unplug and pray, and discombubulator, all free and all work well.
