MY 88 F150's A/C pump is leaking quite a bit out the bottom. I have to replace it. Is there anything else I should do to the system while its empty? What O rings should I replace? Are they (o rings) easy to change? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Replace all the O'rings and also replace your accumulator/drier at the same time as your compressor. You may want to consider swapping to R134 at this time. You can get the kits at local parts stores or most mechanics can do this quickly for a reasonable cost.
yes, i also agree with slikness. i've got a 91 and when mine went out i went to the newer r134. nothing to it. did it all myself in about 3 hrs. you'll love the difference in cost.

I've heard differing opinions and results, but I've had 4 vehicles converted and the only problem I had was one that was converted before I got it. The technician tried to put as much R134 in as the old R12 and it overfilled. Took it down to my folks, they took some out and it worked great. R134 does have different characteristics that the installer has to adjust to, it's not just drain, refill with R134 and go; but if it's done right, it'll do OK. One item to consider, the R12 condenser will not dissapate the heat as well as the newer R134 condensers and this could make your engine run a little hotter since the condenser sits in front of your radiator. I've never experienced this myself, but I've read about it. Make sure you change your accumualator/drier even if you stay with R12 when you change your pump.
I think I have been convinced to go ahead and convert. (At least it will save me a fortune on R12!) Anyone know of any write ups on this conversion, and any good kits to get me started?
Thanks
PS- Will the standard replacement compressor work fine w/r134 or do I need to buy a special one?
A standard compressor will work fine, but if you have to get a new pump anyway, you might try to get one specifically manufactured for R134. Not a huge difference though. If you want a super compressor, get a Sanden; but then you need to get different brackets, etc.
Say, what type of compressor do you need? I have a Nippondenso that I pulled off my '82 that worked great, but I went with the polished Sanden for my new engine. I'd be happy to send it to you if you want it!!
