Check engine light egr valve flow problem

We have a 1998 Explorer XLT V-8 and a couple of weeks ago the check engine light came on and we had it checked at AutoZone and they said it was egr valve with insufficient flow, replaced the egr valve and they cleared the code but now the cel is back on with same code. Any ideas, we would really appreciate your help. The explorer has a very slight miss. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum

And this is why we don't always believe Autozone's diagnosis

Usually the cause of a low EGR flow code (probably a P0401) is a bad DPFE sensor.
If you search in this forum and in the 97-03 F-150 forum you'll find lots of info on the same problem.
Ford has updated the sensor so that's the one I'd buy, not an aftermarket one.

E G R / DPFE sensor

i had the same exact thing happen to my 95 a while back, i changed the dpfe sensor after the egr and no cel light came back on. so much for maufacturers more effishent diagnostics, yea right. i agree with replacing the dpfe sensor, that should work. good luck!

Thanks for the help! Replaced the pdfe sensor last weekend and now the cel light is on again. I checked the vaccum lines for suction and they seemed ok. Could it be the solenoid?

It could be a bad solenoid or plugged ports in the intake manifold.
With the engine idling apply vacuum to the EGR valve. The engine should stall or come close to it if the EGR is working and the ports are clean.

I just put my truck in the shop this morning for this EXACT problem...I got a code P0140 EGR Flow Insufficient. I had the dealer replace the DPFE sensor and no more CEL and the truck drives great.

Your symptoms might include bucking acceleration while at speed, sloppy or inconsistent idle, and or decreased gas mileage.

The new part is plastic and costs a grand total of $172.90 with parts and labor. The dealer will try and talk you into a ton of other things....make them fix the DPFE and thats it and you will be set.

Hi, I applied vaccum and the engine did stall so I am assuming ports and egr are fine. Should I assume now that the cel light is related to a bad solenoid? I have a new egr valve and pdfe sensor. Thanks so much for your help. This is truly a process of elimination.

Took my explorer to have the cel code read and it's still egr insufficient flow. I am wondering how difficult the solenoid is to replace and since I have replaced the egr valve and pdfe sensor is there anything else besides the solenoid that it could possibly be. Is the egr vaccum regulator the egr solenoid. And where are these located? This is so frustrating. I really don't want to pay a shop to do it but I am running out of options. I'd really appreciate some opinions. Thanks

the egr vaccum regulator is on the driver side of the engine, just follow the vacuum line from the EGR valve back, test it by taking of the electrical connection and applying 12vdc across the terminals on the regulator, it should click, if you have a vacuum pump apply vacuum to the engine side of the egr vaccum regulator and it should hold until you activate with the 12 vdc, if it doesnt click, or wont hold vacuum, or wont release vacuum, replace it, good luck

Thanks so much for all the help. We replaced the vaccum regulator and the cel has stayed off for nearly a month. It was a process of elimination but we still replaced all three parts for less than having the egr replaced at our local dealership.
