Driveline lube

Crawled under the truck to lube driveshaft splines to see if that's the cause of the intermittant "clunk" when taking off from stop. However the bolt heads at the rear are different than any I've seen. Do they need a special tool? Also, is there a special tool for the bands around the rubber boot? And where, if other than the dealer would you get the bands?

I forgot what bolts are in the rear. I think they are just metric. You can cut the old band off and just slap a run of the mill hose clamp on there.

I think the bolt heads are 12 point.

And I just used a jiffy tie or stay-tie on the boot.

Ahwile back somebody posted a good idea they pulled off and I've been meaning to copy...After pulling the sline out, drill and tap to install a zirc fitting to grease at will. Some day I'll get to it. Mine is clunking right now...

You dont have to remove the bolts at the rear, only 4 8mm bolts that hold the slip joint to the carrier. Use a tefelon grease, i didn't and my clunk is returning.

Definately use the teflon grease. I did not the first time and the clunk came back within a few months. I could not find the stuff at bumper to bumper or Napa, Ford dealers have it and it is a bit spendy.
