...no idea how this managed to happen...but the rubber boot that protects the splines on the drive shaft is...gone!
While installing the air bags I noticed - no boot!
I called the dealer today and they have one a day out...but does anyone know how those metal bands at each end work? Do you need a special tool to tighten them down?
You don't need a special tool, but you do need to drop the driveshaft from one end or the other. I don't know how you didn't hear it, sounded like a helicopter was right on thp of the car when it happened to mine.
I cut mine off when I regreased my joint and used zip ties.
...so did I! Apparently those zip ties either broke or somehow slipped. The new boot comes with the metal bands, so I want to make sure I don't lose it again.

...yea...you definitely can't get it on with the driveshaft still up...and you probably can't get it over the U joint without crudding it up inside either, so I'm guessing I need to split the shaft apart. I'd want to add more grease anyway (since it looks like most came spinning out in a line across the underside of the body and frame)...so while I'm there, might as well re-grease.

I'm thinking one of two things...
a) I live near an airport where we have CHP and National Guard choppers coming in and out all the time and it happened just as I flew under their flight path (NOT likeley)
...or...
b) The Kenwood Excelon and Phoenix Gold 10s I like to "exercise" when I drive.

I would not worry about it. It also has the ability to trap dirt and moisture inside it.
I'm a offroad jeeper, no one hardly ever runs those boots. We run in some very nasty conditions that your Ex will never see. I have never had a failure for lack of a boot.
