I am looking to put a 5 speed transmission behind my 390. The motor came from a 67 ford Farlain. It now sits in a 66 FWD F100. Was woundering if there was a way to put a 5 speed on it? If so what kind of tranny do I need and will I have to change my bell housing? Any advise would be great.
i dont remember the site but somebody makes an adapter plate that goes behind your origional bellhousing for fe's for a small block ford transmission and also a small block chevy transmission, it comes with everything you need and also a flywheel but its about $600 just for the adapter, i found it just by doing a yahoo search for "fe transmission adapter" or just transmission adapter
do a search in this forum , there was along thread a while back discussing some of the options. Most every option is expensive. Some of the notable entires:
NV4500 -from the dodge trucks
T56- as in the Cheby vettes and F bodies- 6 speeds :-) not cheap.
older big ford 5 speeds- some were behind FEs (actually FTs), but not really an overdrive. But you might be able to compensate with a gear change.
Autos- there are adapters and kits for A0D 4 speed auto transmissions. try Lentech, again expensive. Especially since you'll want a beefed up A0D
Oh and there is also the Gear Vendors overdrive to add to the tranny. Still expensive, but can give you 2x times the gears, with split shifting capability.
Whats your Final Objective with a 5 speed in the truck?? Towing? Racing? street/strip? Just a street cruiser? How much HP are you running and what gears are in the rear end? and how tall are your tires..
One option would be the 5 spd from a medium duty tk with a FT . Get the bell flywheel clutch & trans. Adapt a driveshaft & your ready to go. Our shop has done this for several farmers & contractors & it works very well.

Dendyr, the cheap way to go here is with the Clark 280 series 5spd. There were available in the bigger ford trucks from the early 60's to the late 70s. I paid 250$, and got the tranny, shifter, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel, and the starter. Check out some slavage yards, my stuff came from an F700, with a 361FT engine. DF, @ his dad's house

I'm kinda curious about those too. Would they shift well enough to be able to use them in a performance application, or are they relegated to truck / towing duty?
Oh and Greg, I've heard that those are not overdrive transmissions, but have real steep 1st and 2nd gears. Used with a low (numerically) diff gear it would be like having an overdrive.
There are wide & close ratio also some are overdrive. I have a spicer with OD in my F700 and my 57 F600 has a new process that is OD. As far as shifting is concerned some shift ok some are pretty stiff. As far as towing goes they are hard to beat , and 1st is nice for just crawling or heavy pulling. Most overdrives are about .87 to 1. The clark 5spd seems to be the most popular.

Look into the nv4500 Advanced adapter FTE article - Ceetwarrior Article - info Post - Ceetwarrior FTE - post
This is about all the reliable info I could find. This includes googleing. The AOD might work if you built it up and put it behind a close to stock motor. But it still wasn't made for this amoount of torque. You want a trans. that had a comparable motor behind it. The nv4500 is a good as it gets; for the money.
Good luck.
