ok i put on a edelbrock intake and carb on my truck. i never drove it over 10mph before so it stayed in first. now that i have everything running right i drove it up to 30 but it wouldnt go above 2nd gear. is that the tranny or did i do something wrong. i pluged the vaccuum line to the tranny into the lower port on the carb.
also another question. im wanting to switch to a manual tranny. 4 speed or 5 speed. what would be an easy tranny to build up and put in. must mount up to a 302/351w.
ok ill try that. its possible i mis read. i thought i read the the distrubtor went to the low vac and the auto tranny went to the high vac. but ill try switching it up and see what happens.
i dont have anything else that needs vac but the distributor and the video i posted is of the same carb i got and i hooked it up correctly. Also it doesnt have a 3rd option. it goes PRND1
Kinda sounds like the old "green dot" C4 tranny. Thought that was gone by 68. See if you can find the id tag on the tranny. Number of different manual tranny's will bolt up to your engine. 4X4's are where it gets interesting.
Sounds like you only have a 2spd trans. Especially if everything is original match. I am assuming when you put the shifter in N you are in N and not a forward gear.

No 2 speeds, all autos 3 spds. The Green dot C-O-M would be year correct, but we never know what is installed today.
My truck did that once right after i put an edelbrock 650 w/ electric choke...turns out it was a spark plug that had wiggled loose...i know it doesn't relate, but that's what happened with mine. must have been a coincidence. i run holley now though...never had a single issue at all with anything since then.
its not a 2speed. its a 3spd 11bolt shallow pan. im going to flush the tranny and replace the gaset and filter. i was told by a friend that sometimes happens or the modulator. for all i know it could be going into 2nd and then 3rd and skipping 1st but it just doesnt seem to want to get past 35mph and sounds like the engine is reving at 5k. not for sure though cause i have no tach.
The "Cruise-O-Matic" & "Green Dots" - Ford called its earlier 3spd automatic from the 1958 this same
name, but the 1965 thru 1970 Cruise-o-Matic is basically a C4 with a dual-range valve body that allows the
driver to start out in first "low" gear with automatic shifts up thru 2nd and" D" , Drive. By placing the shifter to
the second gear, "GREEN DOT" or behind the D2 , transmission starts in 2nd gear and with automatic upshifts
to 3rd or "DRIVE" This help reduce tire spin in slippery conditions and engine braking. You knew you
had a C4 Cruise-O-Matic if you had a “GREEN DOT” behind the D2 on column or floor shift indicator. Mercury
called theirs version Merc-O-Matic..
Note the column would have a D2. Is this your pan?
