Ok Guys heres the deal. I have an 81 F150 w 300 6 and the $ speed. This is a california engine with all the emissions junk on it. I want to go ahead and have it re done - it has about 150000-160000 on it and could use a freshening. any way i want to discard all of the emissions stuff and put on a set of headers, and perhaps a diferent intake carb. i'm concerned over the hookups for the stock stuff, ie the vacume lines for the brakes if i go to a different intake and overall cost. i don't need to get 300 horses out of it i just want the best in performance without all the restrictions and i need exelent reliability- no carg/intake that needs to be tweeked monthly. i'm close to the clifford performance store ie within 100 miles and am thinking of having them work it over. i have heard good things here about them and their stuff but am not looking for a 460 out of a 300
YOU GOT BETTER THAN I DO , MY '86 300 SIX HAS A TFI IGNITION THAT WONT COOPERRATE WITH ANY 4BBL CARB OR MANIFOLD(too many modules to screw with)
YOU 81 IS A WHOLE MORE SIMPLE WITH OUT ALL THE COMPUTER GARBAGE.
If you look in the JC Whitney catalog they have some interesting parts that may help. I saw an Offenhauser "straight" manifold that is designed for a Holley #8007 390 cfm 4-bbl carburetor. JCW also has an aftermarket camshaft that should give you more lift/duration.
I'm not sure what you would do with your ignition. It may have to be modified a little.
Good luck. By the way, I have a '86 F150 with the 300 I-6.
You should be able to get rid of that computer controlled ignition easily, I just put a 84 300 in my 82 F100, I just changed the distrubiter, and from the connections on the 84, it looks that the 82 engine harness may plug into the 84 chassis harness, so you could do away with the computer, But, before I swapped engines, I put the 82 carb on the 84, with no ill effects, also, all the vacum hoses, the air pump, and the cat were gone, and most of the other junk was unhooked, and it ran fine, it just looked like hell with everything unhooked.

Hey...i am planing on putting a 460 in my truck. You gaine is that i have a 300 with all the clifford goodies on it. 4bbl Edl., headers, milled head, 260 degree cam. flex fan. i need to sell it so i got some room for that 460 i want! Let me know if you are intrested. the engine has little more than 10,000 on it since the rebuild. The only prob is that i think the shop that set up my head didnt do it right. I thnk i got a valve prob. Smoke rings in the dark if you know what i mean. haha. But it runs like a bat out of hell. You can ezly sink $2000+ into this project......i did. But ill give you a good deal at $600. I need the accereies but you can have the carb, intake, headers.....blah blah.....let me know......Mudinford(No Email Addresses In Posts!)......BTW my name is Dan in Dallas, TX
I love that engine.....and it will run...dont let anywone tell you otherwise!!!

It looks to me like mudinford has a good deal. I was going to suggest the Edelbrock carb as it requires a lot less adjusting than the Holley. The Edelbrock is set and forget, while the Holley is built to adjust to varying conditions for the race track, altitude, etc. You can probably dial in a Holley to give you better 1/4 times, but the Edelbrock will give you more consistant running.
Study your vacuum diagrams and make some good decisions when you start eliminating systems. If you remove a system that is necessary, you may end up with an engine that just won't run right.
The MSD is also a very good suggestion. It's an excellent investment and gives you some seat of the pants umph.
