I think I've read on here somewhere that a lot of you guys think using Rotella is a must. But looking through this Oil & Lube section I haven't found a thread where it's even mentioned.
I just had my '99 7.3L oil changed for the first time since buying it a week ago or so. They didn't have Rotella, but had Havoline 15W30 (?) I didn't know what the previous owner was using. My truck has 134K miles.
What are your thoughts on switching to Rotella and/or what are your other recommendations?
Any good diesel rated 15w40 should work. My favorite is Mystik JT-8, which I use in my 3 cylinder diesel Kubota BX2230 lawn tractor, as well as my '92 Explorer. The Mystik may be somewhat hard to find though, try Farm, Fleet and Barn type stores. Rotella is a good oil, but then again every diesel rated oil with the CI-4 rating is a good oil. Take your pick, you cant go wrong.
TRAKK, PAY REAL CLOSE ATTENTION! You have stated that you put Havoline in your DIESEL. I would suggest that you recheck that. NO Havoline oil is rated for DIESEL service. It is an oil for gas engines. If the folks did put Havoline in the engine, most likely the engine has suffered damage. If they used Chevron Delo 400, that is a diesel rated oil and a good one. I would make sure exactly what oil is in your engine and don't drive it until you know that it is diesel rated oil. Here are the specs: http://www.havoline.com/products/na/...l_mo_tech.html
There are 15w-30sout there but Havoline isn't one of them. I really think Trakk has the wrong info. At least I hope he has the wrong info otherwise, it's going to be a bad thing. Maybe he will post a correction (I hope).

Trakk, I had a 2000 7.3L that I bought new and just traded recently. I used Texaco Ursa Super Plus 15W40 for the life of that truck and the engine is still going strong...never a problem with it. I would be worried about the Havoline 15W30 and maybe that is not quite what they used...advice to get somewhere and find out and I hope your engine is okay.
