Rotella ?

This is a long read but I posted it for the newbies like myself. We've all heard of the problems associated with oil changes and the 6.0. I've now experienced it first hand.

Well the oil change gremlin got me, I guess. Went in for my second oil change (8600 miles). Went to Firestone, they did the first one also, my oil changes are free for three years so I have them done. Picked Firestone because.... well, just because.

Told them three times I wanted Shell Rotella T and was told "that's what they use". Ran OK going home yesterday, but the engine was already warmed up. Went out last night to go to dinner (temps about 60 degrees). I could tell by the sound when it started that something was not right. Once started, it romped in gear then when I moved it took probably half throttle to even untrack. Once it warmed up, it was better. Started it this morning and it had the same symptoms. Called Firestone and again they swore they used Rotalla (they didn't say Shell this time) but come in and they would look at it.

Once there, they pulled it straight into the bay and started draining the oil immediately (a little strange). Talked to the service writer and once I cut through all the "bull" he said they used their house brand, Kendall Rotella (?). I thought Rotella was a trademark of Shell. Anyway they put in Shell Rotella and the problems went away. Talking to one of the other service writers I found out they actually had the Shell Rotella on it's way before they even pulled the truck into the bay.

I have no idea what oil they used initially but I know what the results were. So when someone tells you to use a specific oil in your new 6.0 truck, you might want to listen.

I would not trust any shop other than the dealer or myself to change my oil.

I would document your experience with Firestone. If you develop problems and your service department points at an improper oil, you might want to go back to Firestone for recourse.

It is also worth while to read the owners manual and the diesel supplement.

My brother -in- law and myself went halves on a 55 gallon drum of Shell Rotella, so we do our own oil changes.

It comes out to be about 89 cents a quart, give or take a few pennies. That way I know whats going in it and comming out. It is not hard to change the oil . Thats all you need is a pan big enough for the used oil.

The 6.0 is even easier than the 7.3 as the oil filter is on top of the motor and self drains. I put the oil in a container and bring it to the local transfer station and dump it in the used oil iglo.

Nothing that hard , just piece of mind in maintance of your vehicle
