Sorry, not a truck, but it's a 1991 Ford Crown Victoria with the police package. It's burning up the starter relay on a regular basis so I want to check the wires and make sure it's all right. I found a wire end on the small relay post with no wire to go to it in sight. So I'm wondering if that's the problem and there's two wires going from the back of the starter relay to the starter, one of which is a thicker gauge but isn't connected at either end. I'm wondering if there are two wires that go to the starter or if the old wire was replaced and left but the new wire isn't a high enough gauge and is causing the starter relay to fry under prolonged cranking (due to flooding from a bad carb).
So basically, does anyone know what wires are going to the side posts on the starter relay on a 1991 Crown Victoria, police package?
And, how many wires go to the starter and what gauge should they be?
You should usually have only one wire going to the starter from #6 to #7. It can either be a 6 guage or sometimes a 4 guage. I bet the extra one you have is an original that has been abandoned.
Should have one wire from #1 to #3 which is either a 4 or a 6 guage.
And you will have some smaller wires hooked to #3 which power the rest of the car.
Thanks, that's what I believed was the case with the starter wire as well. Do you know which smaller wires go to #3? I have two on there now and a burnt out end of a wire. Would a missing wire there lead to an easily fried starter relay or just not be sending power to somewhere in the car? Thanks for the info.
If you had a smaller #3 wire missing, you would have a serious lack of power somewhere in the car. This point #3 is usually where people who add power equipment tie into the battery +. Since this was a cop car, I am sure they had lighting and a large 2 way radio that they powered. One of those wires may have been for something like that.
The starter relay is an intermittent duty part. See if getting the carb fixed will eliminate the problem. I am surprised the starter is holding up and not giving a problem.
If the engine is continually flooding, this washes down the cylinder walls, causing excessive wear in the engine. It will also thin out the motor oil, since some of it finds it's way down past the rings.
Yeah, a carb rebuild is on the way. Along with a replacement wire to the starter. Everything important seems to be working so I'll worry about the mystery wire later on. Thanks for the info.
