'68 starter relay

Can someone tell me what the red wire that is spliced to the yellow horn wire that connects to the terminal that connects to the positive battery terminal of the starter relay is for? I'm installing a one wire alternator and am replacing the starter relay and noticed that this red wire was broken and barely touching. The truck was running fine before the only thing that wasn't working was the ammeter. This red wire doesn't go toward the alternator or the regulator but it comes out of the wire harness from the passenger side of the cab.

Is your truck a Camper Special? There's a red feed wire there for the CS harness.

No, it's not a Camper Special but it says Custom Cab on the side. I think that the wire is about an 18 gauge so I don't think that it would be used to power the camper. I have a '67 wiring diagram and the schematic shows a black wire spliced to the yellow horn wire connecting to the positive terminal and the black wire goes to the B terminal on the old alternator. Mine is red and terminates at the starter relay.

Ok, went out to the parking lot and poped the hood.

The red wire you are talking about goes into the harness and then loops right back out of the harness to an inline fuse holder. From there it goes back into the same harness to the amp meter. This is one side of the meter, the other side comes from the other inline fuse that is on the other side of the shunt. They fuse both sides because both sides are hot.

Hmmm, well that must be why the ammeter wasn't working before. I think I saw that inline fuse on the alternator side of a four way connector, the fuse was still intact. Since I'm discarding all the wiring from the four way connector to the alternator and the external regulator then the ammeter will not work, correct? I'm going to install a volt meter anyway, do I need to worry about the other end of the ammeter if it is still hot? I haven't found the other inline fuse yet, do you know where it is? Thanks again.

The inline fuse by the alternator side of the four-way connector is one of the fuses (high-side of the shunt) and the inline fuse by the starter solenoid is the other fuse (low side of the shunt). Yeah, if you take out that wiring the ammeter won’t work. Someone must have already removed the fuse by the solenoid. If you remove the fuse by the alternator then I wouldn’t worry about the ammeter.

Thanks Barry, can I ask you another question? Do you have a two wire connector with a black wire and green wire with black stripe laying on your drivers side fender in the engine compartment? The schematic I have shows the green with black stripe as a headlight wire but my lights are hooked up correctly and everything works so I was wondering what this connector is for? Thanks again for your help!

No problem but I'm really swamped at work today and won't be able to check it out before this evening, sorry.

Ok, I checked and the two-wire connector with the black wire and green w/ black stripe wire that lays on the driver’s fender goes to the windshield washer pump.

Funny, the ’68 wiring diagram shows it different, can’t believe everything you read I guess.

Hey, thanks again! My truck is missing the windshield washer so I picked up an aftermarket one. Now I know where to plug it in!
