My brakes worked fine until I parked my truck on an incline driveway. The pedal will not go down and the brake lights are constantly on. Any suggestions on what it could be. The master cylinder is only two years old (brand new). Could it be the return spring or do I have to get rid of the clutch pedal that was original with the truck? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....Oh yeah, I could move a little bit but the point remains, what in the world could be wrong?
If you have an original brake light switch, pull one of the two wires off the switch. If the lights go out, you either have a bad switch or, more likely, you have pressure in the brake system that is not bleeding off through the master cylinder pressure release. Second check is to carefully open a bleeder screw on one of the wheels. Make sure you have some chocks in place, or you have it in gear, so when the brakes release you don't have a bad day. If you get some pressurized fluid out of the bleeder and the brakes release, you probably need to look at the master cylinder.
Is the master cylinder rod adjusted properly so it comes far enough out of the MC when you release the pedal?
i tried the switch last night...took off the wires and yeah they went out...when they are hooked up, the pedal is pulled all the way up (by hand); the lights go out...so i think there is something with the master cylinder....i am using the original brake with clutch assembly...do you think i should get rid of it and by a new brake mechanism unit and get rid of that old 50's stuff?
Well, I love the old 50's stuff and mine work fine (for now) so I think I may be a bit biased. It's not a big job to replace the master cylinder and they are not that expensive. Whatever you decide, do a good job. We don't want to read about you in the papers - especially in the obituaries!
Sounds like your push rod is too long. Loosen the mounting bolts on the M/C and see if that releases the pressure. Had that problem on my Accord when I replaced the power booster. There is a special tool for setting the push rod length. I just mounted the booster, and two miles down the road it locked up tight. I backed off the push rod adjustment and it's been fine for the last 8 years. The only other thing I think it could be is something in the system besides brake fluid. Years ago when I was employed as a Brake & Front End Mechanic. A car came in that someone had put some oil in the M/C. All rubber had swelled and locked everything, talk about a mess !!
