Brake Booster/ Braking problem

My '90 F150 will from time to time let the brake pedal go all the way to the floor before it will slow the truck down. It has happened a few times in the the yard which doesnt bother me very much but when I almost ran into the rearend of a semi, that just got to me. Could it be a bad booster, which is what Im thinking, or something else?

If you have no brake fluid leaking anywhere then there's a good chance it's the brake booster. Check the rear wheel cylinders and all the plumbing just to be sure.

I was under it the other day before it started to rain & the olny leak was on the back of the motor that drained down to the bottom of the bellhousing. But Ill give it another look when I get to the shop later. Will pretty much any booster work off of 87-96?

James, I do not think tere is anything wrong with your brake booster, usually when they go bad it will make your brake pedal hard to push, not go to the floor like yours is. Also you can usually hear vacumn (hissing sound) leaking noise when you push on the brake pedal. Get in your truck with the engine off, push the brake pedal down till it stops then hold it there for about a minute. If it goes to the floor or drops any futher from what you think is normal then you have a brake fluid leak somewhere in the system. I would start with the easiest to check, the master cylinder, see if there is any wetness between the master cyl and booster on the bottom side. If there is then replace the master cylinder. If not now look under the rear of the truck on the inside of the wheels. If you see any fluid coming from between the backing plate and brake drum then replace the rear wheel cylinder. If it is all dry then start checking all of the brake lines from front to rear for leaks. I personally believe that your master cylinder is going bad since the problem is intermitent. Good Luck. Joe

some master cylinders go bad internaly-bypassing fluid internally. it seems to happen more and more with trucks of this era. I have replced mine twice and my bros. once, both are 89s

Mine was doing that for a while, it hadn't had a bleed for what looked like the 16 years of its life, I bought it in January. I did a bleed on the brakes and the rears where still not working correctly, I then did a bleed on the ABS unit, which is under the drivers floorpan on the frame. That all helped, but there is still a problem, now my rear brakes lockup to easily. I also have a sinking pedal, but I only notice it when the bridge goes up and I am stopped on an incline. My ebrake cable needs replacement too so I don't have that either. I am sure it is the master, and I feel that is your problem too.
