It appears that some low reving [4000 / 4500 rpm] tachometers were used in large trucks [F600] with gasoline engines. Most that I have seen [on forums] are 4000 rpms. On the back, they have the same four terminals as the 6000 rpm gauges shared by 6 cylinders and V8s.
The diesel tachs will not work with the gasoline engines [I tried]. Instead of getting their signal from the 12V @ the coil, the signal is in millivolts and is supplied by a sending unit specific to the diesel engine. I am not certain, but believe it may be driven by the injector pump?
If anyone runs across one of the 4000 rpm units, PM me as I would be interested.
I have a 85 Inline 6. It originally did not have a tach, but I bought a gauge cluster out of a 80s F-350 that had one. Anyhow, because my truck never had a hook up for a tach would I be able to install one? And if so how would I go about doing this?
I included some pictures of my new dash.
Thanks!
If the photo is of the "new" cluster, did your truck originally have the gauges or "idiot" lights?
