Now that I have to buy new rocker assemblys, should I spend a few dollars more for the adjustables? I'm going to run the Crane 901 cam, will the lift change much with the adjustables?
Yes you should. The adjustables let you accutatly set lifter pre load. I too am running the Crane 901 cam with the stock non-adjustable rockers. It works fine, no issues at all, excpet for a little valvetrain ticking that is unoticable. The only reason I am running the non-adjustables are because I am a poor man and am already in debt because of my rebuild which went way over what I thought it would, the adjustables will have to work for know.
I think the census was about a year and a half ago..it was best for the Valve train on anything over a .550 lift to run the recommended springs for the cam and ajustable rocker's...
On my new to me 390...I'am going to go with the hardened shafts as the heads allready have the ajustable's on them...
The lift wont change a whole heckuva lot, 1.73:1 ratio for the non-adjustables, and 1.76:1 for the adjustables. The advantage is that you can accurately set lifter preload, and adjust for any variances in the valvetrain, such as a different cam, a valve job, etc.
The rocker assembly goes for $260, and the pushrods for $40, at DSC. Get the recommended springs. For the 901 you shouldn't need anything fancier than that.
I ordered the adjustable setup from DSC last week. I went ahead and got the solid spacers as Dennis stated I'll have a more definite lift. It's only $20 more and Dennis stated it's much better than the sideload springs. Hopefully I'll get this thing back together sometime soon and we'll see how it all works out.
