NEW GUY HERE, Im thinking of buying a 1975 f100 shortbox 4X4. It has a 4 speed, NP205. The guy that owns it doesnt have a clue to what year or displacement the motor is. The only thing he knows is that it has been swapped from a donar truck sometime in its life. I'm kind of familiar with the 302[have one in my cobraII] but I think that the motor in this truck is a lot bigger. Is ther any way to tell what size it is and year? How do you tell if its a big block or small block? It has a very wide intake, but it is a 2 barrle. I havent counted bolt holes on covers, but I think it has 7 per side. It has had a power steering conversion and front disk brakes fron a doner truck. Is ther any codes on the block that I can look up? Thanks.....for the help...
Well, if it was a big or small block, the easiest way to tell is it would have a bow-tie on the valve cover and the distributor would be in the wrong place!
If the intake manifold extends under the valve covers, it belongs to the FE family, making it a 360 or 390 (probably). There are also ways to tell from the number of valve cover bolts and the directions the plugs point. Try doing a search on engine size threads.
7 bolts - 429/460
8 bolts - 351m/400 and thermostat housing is on the BLOCK not the intake
5 bolts - FE 352/360/390 and they all say 352 on the front of the block under the drivers side head
6 bolts - 289/302/351
The truck wouldnt of came from the factory with a 351m/400 or a 460. Chances are it came with a 300-6, or a 360.
Thanks guys, sorry, I feel like an idiot I should have known about the "big or small block" thing. I will take a closer look with all your info in mind....jay
