Hi there. I just pulled the oil pan and pump on my 79 F150 4x4. I gut it all back together and have no oil pressure. The rod that goes from pump to motor must have fell out of position before I got it bolted down?? Does this sound right? I also put 4quarts in and never drained the oil filter it should be plenty to pump shouldnt it? I gues I just wanted to make sure everyting is ok befor topping it off. Also what is better way to go with headers the fender headers or std long headers? Any sugestions would be great. Thanks,Troy
If I were you, I would pull it all apart again, and make sure everything is in right. If you don't have any oil pressure, it will be not long (as in minutes, maybe seconds) until your motor seizes up.
As far as headers, I think the general consensus is to go with headers that are inside the frame, long tube style.
did you prime the pump before you put it on? and before you cranked the truck did you use one of the priming tools to get the oil pumping through the engine before you put the distributer back on? You can pull the distributer out and shine a flashlight down the hole to see if you can see the drive shaft for the pump. on my 302 the shaft had a collar on it that kept it from falling into the oil pan if it had missed the spot on the oil pump.
I had just changed the oil last week and was just trying to fix the leak i found the week before. I didnt prime the pump after I put it back on. I havent ever primed a pump before. You say take out the dist? What kind of tools do you need to prime the pump???
yes , you take out the distributer and the top of the drive shaft for the oil pump will be at the bottom of that hole. or at least it should be if it didn't fall into the oil pan. but anyway you can go to autozone and get an engine oil pump primeing tool that hooks up to any drill and it fits on to the shaft to drive the oil pump to get the oil flowing through the engine before you start it. or in this case to make sure it is pumping oil period. the drill should be in reverse if i remember right. but autozone has this on their loan a tool program so you can give them 10 bucks use it take it back and get your 10 bucks back. just don't do like i did an write a check they make you wait 8 days before you can get your money back.
