power window motor question

My power window motor needs replacement on my 97 expedition and my haynes manual gives a big warning to bolt the sector gear and and backing plate together or serious injury could result. Do you do this after you take the whole assembly out of the door and before you separate the motor from the regulator? I can't see where or how this is done while everything is riveted to the inside of the door panel?
What is the proper way to drill out rivets?
Thanks

Drilling out rivets

Don't know of a proper way, I used a small bit, then went to a bigger bit then pulled the rivet out with pliers.

I have no idea about the window motor, but I've drilled out tons of rivets. I use a bit that is the same size, or just slightly smaller than the shank on the rivet. You can use a larger one too if you don't care about risking scratching the surface around the rivet. Drill through the head until the head seperates from the shank. Then pop the rivet out the backside.
