1988 Start-Run-Stall

Hello All-

I've got a 1988 F350, 5.8EFI w/5-speed.
I have a issue that's been puzzling me for a while now. WHen I start it cold, it fire right up, runs 2 seconds and stalls. Warm starts aren't ever a problem, just cold ones. Sometimes it'll do the start, run, stall sequence 2 or 3 times before it runs. My foot can keep it going, but not easily.

Computer has no stored codes, and no KOER codes, but sometimes will flash the CEL under moderate acceleration before completely warmed up.

In recent history I have replaced the MAP, O2, EGR valve, exaust sys., Fuel Pres. Reg., filters, and it still does it.

Any guidance would be welcomed.

If it only does it when cold I would try cleaning the IAC and if that does not work then check the coolant temp sensor.

Coolant sensor was replaced.

I'll try the IAC.

I was thinking the CEL was related though.....

.......but sometimes i'm not the sharpest knife.

Hey, let me throw in my two cents worth. My 89 5.8l efi was doing exactly same until I changed my plug wires. Now she starts from cold and idles smooth. Hope it helps .

Tried that too.

And when I do keep it going for a minute or two, when I let it idle it dies.

It's like it needs to stall to find the idle point.

Next I'll try again looking for vacuume leaks and if not that the IAC.

No CM (stored) codes?? The CEL came on you said, there has to be codes. Probably related to the problem, and while accelerating, I'm thinking the TPS.

Try testing the TPS.

My 87 F250 with 302 and 4spd stick does the exact same thing. I think it's the IAC too. I'm going to get one and see if it fixes the problem.

The CEL flashes intermittantly, doesn't stick. I'll get like a flash a second for maybe 3-6 flashes. Quick flash, no codes. KOEO code 11, KOER code 11.

Once it's stalled once or twice it idels fine. Kinda hard on the starter though.

Once it's warm, no CEL flashes.

TPS seems to test OK.

None of the plastic tubing in the engine bay has a problem.

DOHC330MustangGT - can you let me know what happens? Seems whenever I get near the truck it's to work, not work on it. kinda sucks.

My 88 is still doing the same thing.I replaced the IAC, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump, alt, and it still idels for 1-2min smooth then the engine light comes on and it starts chugging then stalls.I thought i had it fixed, but not.Iam having a hard time getting the Oxygen Sensor off,and the throttle position sensor is no easy task to replace.I think i will do that next.If i get the chance.

Did you set the base idle ? To do this warm up the truck to normal operating temp. then unplug the IAC. Set the idle using the stop screw on the throttle body to around 750 RPM. Shut down truck then plug the IAC back in. Restart and idle should level out where it should be.
