cold start

i've grown really attached to my 91 f150. i use it daily in my business and it rarely lets me down. i do have one problem that i can't solve and i need some tips. when i go to start the truck for the first time each day, i turn the key and hear the fuel pump priming and etc, but then the motor just turns without firing for awile. i've turned the key and waited up to 30 secs, and nothing helps. i've changed the fuel filter, new rear fuel pump in mid 04 (i've got twin tanks), new egr in spring 04. the only thing that works is to cranks the engine three or four times like this, and then it fires and will often run rough, stalling as soon as i press the gas pedal. after i go through all this, the it's fine for the rest of the day. no problems starting or running at all. but the next morning, wet or dry, hot or cold, it's the same thing. can you guys help me ? i love this truck and i don't wnat to make a problem worse.

You'll need to test that egr code you got as well as test your fuel pressures and get back to us.

So you're getting a bad EGR code? When you replaced it last time did you buy the electronic thingy on top of it too?

Even if it's a new EGR, I'd buy another and try it out and if it doesn't help Id return it the very same day. They're easy to change out, so it's the first place I'd start since you got a EGR code and they do cause rought running, etc.

The very next thing I'd go after is the idle air valve. I think you can get one for like $35 at Advance.

Hope this helps and let us know what works!

When it does finally start, can you see black smoke coming out of the tailpipe?

no - no black smoke at all. i do get condensation out of the tailpipe every so often, but the inside of the tailpipe is clean. no carbon or any kind of buildup

What kind/brand plugs do you use? I had a similar problem for years when I was using bosch platinum plugs and one year decided to use motorcraft plugs and the problem went away.
