straight pipe
i was told that if i run 5 feet of straight pipe without at least a glasspack i would do damage to the valves. any truth is this? i see alot of posts of people doing this without a problem.

As long as cold air can't contact a hot exhaust valve you'll be all right.
If your pipe is long enough to be behind the starter your fine.
