Ive seen some people straight pipe without a muffler 351's..400's...460's...etc. and I was just wondering if anyone has had any negative responses from doing this for a while. I dont think it should be a problem since race cars have no mufflers...and they seem to be fine. Couple people have mentioned "backpressure" but anyone with more details? thanks.

You'll find a brick on your seat or floor pan.... along with the glass that it went through.
Rumbly is cool. Loud and obnoxious are for immature knuckleheads that deserve what they get.

And THAT sir, would be your "negative response"...........
unless the OP lives way out in the country, without neighbors closer than a mile away, not advised
Its still REALLY loud though! There's a reason why really only race vehicles use straight pipes...because they're stupid loud! Stomp the gas, and kiss your hearing (at least for a little while) goodbye if you don't have decent insulation in your cab!

Gater, if you have any questions, take in perspective the fact that if you drive by any of our 5 houses, we will throw bricks at you! We are likely a fairly representative cross section of America.......If you want neighbors to hate you, and police to cite you go right ahead and run straight pipes

Cops 'round here will give ya a ticket for duals with some flowmasters on them. Lol damn city folks
My sons 77 f150 has a 400 with headers and straight pipes. Part of his list of things to do before it is concidered drivable is mufflers. But he will be driving it as a 15 year old on a school license, which is VERY probationary.
My 390 in my 76 is straight piped. 2.5" from the collector back, and it screams. I love the way it sounds and being in Florida and a decently rural area I don't have any rear concerns. Last time I got a speeding ticket the cop said 'he heard me floor it leaving school' well all I did was downshift with my c6 to keep up. It honestly isn't that loud as long as it's below roughly ~2500 Rpms and doesn't pop(needs to be tuned better, can't figure out my projection???)
