My next door neighbor has a 98 Ranger with 4x4 and a 3.0 L. The hubs in front are shot (clicking and no 4x4 engagement) and they need to be replaced. For those of you who have done it youself, how hard is it and what kind of tools are nessicary. Also, what parts would I need to get from ford in order to do this? I've never done hubs on a viehicle before, but i'm pretty mechanically inclined and can read a service manual pretty well (I would have to get one). Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
Bcjim- thanks for the reply. If I got a Ford manual to do the job, what would the difficult part be? Do I need special tools or is it a complicated procedure?
I think 98 was the first year of the pulse vacuum hub (PVH). These are spendy hubs (maybe $300 each at the dealer) and there is no aftermarket unit available that I've seen or heard of. One solution is to modify them to be full time, like Rangers have been for a few years now. The procedure might be in here if you do a search; it's also over on therangerstation.com (might have pics showing the process). From what I've read, it's not especially difficult to perform the mod. Provided your neighbor opts for the mod due to $ reasons, you'll be a hero for saving him the cost of new hubs .
BTW, I have to wonder if there is a chance it's something other than the hubs. Perhaps they are not getting vacuum. I don't think both hubs would fail at the same time (mechanically). I think I'd make sure everything associated with the vacuum part of the system was working right before jumping into new hubs. Let us know what you find.
