I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I am pretty new to the 4x4 world. I have a 94 Explorer XLT that needs an automatic hub replacement. Everywhere I have read recommends conversion to manual locking hubs. So I've decided to switch to manual locking hubs, but I have some questions:
1. What brand do people recommend? Warn, Mile Marker,..etc
2. What is the typical cost for total conversion?
3. How difficult is it to swap out hubs? Do most people recommend taking it to 4x4 specialty shop or can this be done in the driveway?
4. Are there any web sites or companies to purchase the hubs for cheaper than the local Napa or Advance autoparts stores?
Hi, I haven't done this in a long while but here is what I recall about this.
1. The brand I would use is Warn seems to most popular
2. I did not know the cost as my freind bought the kit and I did the installation.
3. I recall it being rather straightforward so you should be able to do this at home with the proper tools.
4. Sorry, I am not familiar with a web site for this. I would think your local 4x4 shop can help with this.
I know I'm late on this one,but its a very easy repair. Take off the front wheels, pop off the little metal rings(from the factory they put these on to hold the hub on when the rest of the vehicle is assembled), slide off the old one. When putting the new one on,slide the hub on,if it does not want to go on flush, twist the axle behind the rotor, while holding the hub against the rotor. When it finally meshes,it will sit flush on there and your ready to go.
