Its only necessary to disconnect the battery for a few minutes if you need to clear old stored codes that you have taken steps to fix the problems. A reset of the PCM by disconnecting the battery isn't necessary with a base timing reset. The "loss of SPOUT signal" code (Code 18 on most EEC engines) will clear itself once the signal is reinstated (SPOUT connector reinstalled).
