Need some help with this one... My local shop has told me that the a/c evap. core needs to be replaced in my 1997 Explorer because it leaks, and the a/c will not hold a charge. They did the die test, and found the leak in the a/c core. Now I know that this item is in the same location as the heater core, question is....Is this something that the average guy can change, or should this be left to the dealership? They quoted me $300 for the part, and another $600 to install it. I found the same part at a A/C supply outlet for around $120 bucks.. Any Help????? Thanks
Unless you know exactly what you are doing and have the equipment, the A/C stuff should be left to a shop. IMHO. I have done alot of work on my '97 but left that one to my local dealer. I am pretty sure that there are even environmental laws that prohibit even the release of the refrigerant into the air. Thus, you need gauges and collection equipment to do this job properly.
By the way, I don’t have my receipt, but believe that my local Ford dealer charged around $500 for this repair, including parts, labor, and charging the system afterward. If by “local shop” you mean someone besides the Ford dealer, you might at least check with them first. If it was from the dealer, an independent may be able to do it for less.
