i drive a 81 f100 with 2.73 and o/d . yes you will need to be at 55 then put in o/d,it's a great truck,i get 19 and 20 mpg around town, about 26 to 28 on hwy. so i think it is a good set up.
jwilson0265,
I used to get good gas mileage at 20-21 mpg (highway). I thought that was great. But 26 to 28? What's you secret?
I have an 81 F150 I-6, carbed, used to have a 2:75 rear end; now running a 3:50 ratio, T-18 and a Ranger torgue splitter(27% overdrive). I shift at around 2000 rpm. Mpg's did drop to about 17 highway when I changed the rear-end ratio and went from P235-75R15 to 9.50-R15 tires.
it is no secret. the ford place here in sanford did the turn up last, thay told me thay have not seen a 300 inline get that good of mpg,we install a new carb, two year ago a it's been getting that mpg sents.we do have the automat chock off,or set where it's not working,i think that mite have something to do with it. james
