For anyone you guys with a toolbox or headache rack or both. What do you have? do you like it, would you suggest a different one. Why do you like it? Hate it?
I thinking of a weatherguard gull wing box paired with a Highway Products headache rack. what would you suggest?
Can't go wrong with either one, both good quality items. I like the gull wing design, always seemed easier to get things in & out. But as was mentioned they are spendy.
I have an original back rack and UWS low profile aluminum single lid box. To me the gull wings make it a pain to get bigger items in and out of the box. Granted im not a contractor or anything like that. The box is used to store ratchet straps tow chains recovery straps tool kit jumper cables ect. I can fit 4 milk crates in the bottom of the box which helps to keep everything organized. Now if i was a contractor or something like that and was in and out of it several times a day I would go with WeateherGuard all day but the UWS is a nice sturdy middle of the road box and is made in the USA.
Been a contractor for years now and used both styles of those boxes, gotta say full lid beats that gull wing setup hands down.
I'm taller than some bit over 6', even so that reach to that center section of one of those dual lids with the box mounted across the back of most trucks? is generally to high just a pain to access that area.
Full lid that area isn't' covered providing full access jump up in back of the truck, something can't do gull wing box, jumping up in the back of the truck does not provide improved access to that area, worse in fact. Deal with the lid hold it straigh up with one hand while reaching around and in side........nope just a pain....
"Weatherguard" yea nice stuff.....pricey and if "brand name" type stuff is important to ya heck go for it, if not plenty of other boxes that are decent enough, offer similar quality yet at about half the price.
I'm curious what brands you're referring to? Only ones that I've seen around here thats close to weatherguard is protek. They are pretty spendy as well. I currently have a better built on mine & it's ok but not even close to protek or weatherguard. Metal is about half as thick in my betterbuilt. Maybe some companies that just sell regionally?
I saw this video and I keep a lot of stuff in my current ride(suv) A couple hundred dollars( more like $500-$600) worth of stuff and there is probably more sentimental value to me than that and I'm not rich I worked my butt of over the years to get what I got but I figure if you going to keep a bunch of stuff in your truck that you spent a lot of time and money pick it up would you want to buy something to protect it and not have to worry.
plus one size fits all full sized truck so if i ever trade up or get a new ride and can take it off one and put it on the other. They should last me a lifetime and then some. But I was just curious to what you guys had or would suggest I get?
I was hoping to see some pics and sorta tell me what you like and dislike about your own
There are a couple pics of mine in my profile album, the better built sticker came off. I've since had to remove the hi lift because the corner seams were tearing open. I had put 5*8 reinforcement metal plates behind the brackets. Like I said it's been ok, not great. Have to adjust the latches once a year so it opens/releases on both sides. It does spend a lot of time bouncing around back roads. I also had to install extra foam around top edge to keep snow out when it was snowing sideways. Best bet is just go
somewhere that sells them & compare.
Don't get me wrong, I have had a couple Weather guard boxes.
They are JUST as easy to get in to. All you need is a hammer and a screw driver. Drive the screwdriver into the lock cylinder an twist. It is that simple
How do I know this? Because I bough weather guard box that was locked(with the keys in it) from a used car lot . So I did the screwdriver trick. I was in, in 5 seconds
If you want a box that is basically impossible to get into with hand tools, buy one of those steel job boxes like Knack
Spent few minutes looking at boxes used to be a time when paid more for weatherguard equipment, paid premium for the name.
Not so much the case now appears most boxes sharing same/similar features fairly equal in price, couple hundred up or down.
Can buy a WG box good size with all bells and whistles for around 8, very much in line with other manufactures offering the same thing these days.
They lock yes but locks only keep honest people honest, slow down everyone else just a little bit nothing more.
Boils down to where you're willing to park, that's and whats in it is more important over strength of any locking system.
