The rev-limiter should kick in at 5500 rpms. You can go all the way to it with out worry.

IMO I'd be a bit more conservative on the RPMs. I've got a 302 in my boat and both Ford and the marinizer (Indmar) recommend a do not exceed RPM range of 4,400 to 4,600. The horsepower on these engines is rated at 3,900 to 4,000 RPMs so I'm not sure what you would be gaining by exceeding 4K.

a marine engine will be different then in a truck/car. most 302's redline at 5800-6200 depending on condition of motor and if its got roller cam/rockers

I have the rev set at 5k on my 351W, and that has a longer stroke that the 302, and wants to keep climbing. I'd say that 5500-6k on the 302.
