would I be ahead to swap my 4.9 Auto to a 5.0 and keep the auto, or should I keep the 4.9 and swap in a 4 spd and transfer case and rear driveshaft? I have a 1985 F-150 4X4 with the 300/auto combination. I have a 302 that had new bearings and high volume oil pump put in 2000 miles before it was pulled from the vehicle. I'll need to swap the oil pan because it is out of a car, and also will need the frame perches for the 302 ( can't seem to be able to find anywhere). There is almost always parts vehicle with the manual trans ect. in the bulletin board in my area so that shouldn't be hard to come by.
In your opinion which idea would be the best since I use the truck to haul firewood, gravel ect. on aregular basis?
Keep the 300. The 302 doesn't really have much bottom end for hauling much more than a brick. A good 4 speed with a granny low will do just fine with a 300.

I'm with Mike G, if you want a little more grunt, go lower gear, as the 300 will outperform the 302 for this duty, and less hassle. If you just need take off power, but would like to retain your current highway rpms, then go with the 4 speed. On a side note, I think the perches for a 6 and a 302 are the same, but I may be wrong. Also, I don't know as the driveshaft length is different or not between a manual and auto for 4x4, but if it is, the front driveshaft will need to be replaced as well.
I also agree, stick with the 300-6 get a 4.10 gears installed and that thing will haul just fine. if you were to go thru the swap process of a 302 might as well jump up to a 351w and be done with it. it would require the same work as a 302 swap but better torque then all the motors and is still bolt up to your tranny. sell your 302 so you can get a cam and 4brrl intake/carb for that 300-6 as well. check out cliffordperformance.com
