Engine swap

I'm getting ready to swap the engine out in my 95 F150 4x4. The stock engine took a dive on my a while back and I have found a freshly rebuilt 302 to go back in it. This new engine has an E303 camshaft in it. Does this cam have the same firing order as the stock cam, or should I swap the original into the new engine? If I can keep it, I wouldn't mind having the E cam in there to give the engine a little more muscle, but I'm not married to it. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Mabey I'm wrong. Please correct me if I am. But I have never heard of a cam changing anything but lift and duration of the valves, assuming the cam is in the right block. I know nothing of the E303 cam but I would think that the block it is in also has a crank and a distributor. Since all these parts are linked by gears and chains, typical in any short or long block assembly, then the parts should be comptaible with each other if you expect the engine to work. Have you seen this new 302 actually fire? I would be leary of any block that could not be bench fired by the builder. Especially if it was not built for you. Even cold it should have a distrubitor installed, so timing would not be an issue.

While increasing/decreasing the lift and duration of valve opening, the cam also controls the cylinder order in which the valve opens/closes. Therefore, it determines the firing order of the engine. In the case of a feul injected engine, the computer also has a preset order that it will fire the injectors, in time with the valve opening/closing. In most non HO 302's, they use the standard 302 firing order, however, in HO and some later engines, from what I understand, the engine/cam uses the 351 firing order. I'm trying to ensure that my engines computer is expecting a 351 firing order to match the firing order of the cam.

Also, thank you for your concern about the engine. I actually built the engine for my father for his bracket race car. He decided to go a different way with the car and I bought the engine from him. I am highly confident in the buildup of this engine.

I always thought that the E303 cam was for 5.0 HO's, which means you'll have the 351 firing order. You could use the engine, all you would have to do is change spark plug wires to the correct firing order, and swich up the fuel injector harnesses. However, if you have speed-density rather than MAF, the injector fire in batches of 4, so injector order probably wouldn't matter too much.

you built that motor for a bracket racer and putting it into your 4x4. not the best combo, that motor is built for hi rpm power and probably doesnt produce any torque till around 2500+rpms which isnt good. I know you have this motor already but why not sell it and upgrade to a 5.8 swap. you gain so much and is a direct swap. the wiring harness , accessory brackets, and motor mounts from your 302 will swap over. all you would need is a 5.8 dizzy,upper/lower intake, proper flexplate and a 5.8 oilpan. you gain an instant 40lb ft of torque by going this route and the mpg is about the same as a 302.
but like said above just change the firing order on the dizzy and the injector harness order you will be fine
